Facing Divorce? Play it Cool

Divorce is difficult. There’s no arguing that the mental, emotional, and physical challenges of this life-changing event take a toll. If you are facing a divorce, whether it was initiated by you or by your spouse, you can expect to experience a range of emotions in the coming months. You can’t go wrong when you have an experienced local attorney on your side.

Mississippi Divorce Facts

If you are contemplating a divorce, you are not alone. Mississippi divorce rates are among the highest in the nations. For men, the rate is the 11th highest, and for women, it is the 6th highest in the country.

Strive for a “Clean” Divorce

Although it may be tempting to try to jab your ex as often as possible, if you want to come out on the other end with mental and emotional stability, you’ll be better off playing it cool:

  • Keep the playground name-calling and nastiness to a minimum, especially if there are children involved. Remember that when you hurt your ex, you’re potentially hurting your kids.
  • Avoid crazy social media posts that may cast you in a bad light. Saying cruel things about your ex, pictures of your new sidekick, or drunken party pics will not be helpful in divorce proceedings;
  • Try to eliminate joint debt as much as possible. While you may be tempted to go on a shopping spree and try to stick your ex with the bill, chances are it will backfire on you by simply complicating things;
  • Start making lists of property, especially items that have personal meaning to you or your spouse. Figure out what you absolutely cannot part with, and be willing to give up items of value in the divorce, as well;
  • Make copies of important paperwork like tax documents, deeds, and bank records;
  • If custody is going to be an issue, start preparing your case by documenting concerns and summarizing your own assets;
  • Focus on the future, not the past.

When it’s all Said and Done…

Following any divorce, you may feel a bit deflated. Picking yourself up and moving forward will be difficult, but it’s exactly what you need to do. Here are some tips to help you along:

  • Give yourself permission to feel sad.
  • Think about the good things in yourself and your life;
  • Try a new hobby or activity. Mingle with a new crowd. Just get out and do something;
  • Refuse to be lonely. Fill your alone time with satisfying activities. Read a book; finish a jigsaw puzzle; do some volunteer work;
  • Keep an eye on the future. Life is different; it’s not over. Attack the future with energy and a positive outlook.
