Human Error Causes Accidents

Driver

A disastrous head-on collision resulted in three fatalities on I-59. Tragically, when a van zigzagged down the road in the wrong direction, it smashed into two other vehicles.  Two additional vehicles were then involved in the aftermath, resulting in multiple injuries.  It can be safely concluded that this catastrophe was the result of human error, and the impact for multiple families will be enduring and severe.  If only drivers would understand the power in their hands when they get behind the wheel of a 2,000-pound motor vehicle.  If you or a loved one has been seriously impacted by an accident due to another driver’s errors, seeking the assistance of a local personal injury attorney may be the best decision you could make in the aftermath.

Driver Errors all too Common

Studies find that roadway accidents are the result of human error more often than not.  As one gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is essential to for drivers to keep in mind that their actions could result in a safe and secure commute, or could just as easily put people in the hospital, or in the graveyard.  The most common driving errors that could easily be avoided include:

  • Suffering distractions: Whether it’s a phone, food, fellow passengers, or your pet dog, allowing distractions to take your attention away from the road for even a couple of seconds could have disastrous outcomes. Distractions cause more accidents than any other single factor.
  • Driving while incapacitated: Whether inebriated, reacting to prescription drugs, or otherwise unable to function safely, it is simply irresponsible to drive in this condition. Many drivers tell themselves it’s okay “just this one time,” or because it’s just for a short distance.  The fact is, driving while incapacitated is a horrible idea.
  • Fatigued driving: Too often, drivers try to push through their fatigue instead of pulling over.  This can lead to injuries or fatalities in dozens of different scenarios.
  • Speeding: This is thought to be the second most frequent cause of traffic accidents, following only distractions.  Speed limits are posted for a reason.  Follow them!
  • Reckless driving: Zigzagging through traffic, tailgating, and neglecting to use turn signals are all factors that are connected to collisions. Racing through heavy traffic is particularly dangerous.
  • Wrong-way driving: When drivers fail to pay attention to signs indicating one-way roads, or when they cross over into oncoming traffic, the outcomes can be perilous.
  • Running red lights and stop signs: Intersections can be exceedingly dangerous, particularly when drivers fail to stop as directed.  Speeding through, or even rolling through on a turn, can lead to collisions with other drivers, pedestrians, or cyclists.
